Fishing and Species
The Clackamas and Santiam River fishing is all accessed by either a drift boat or a raft on day floats. The fishing is done while wading and is swinging flies. Presentation ranges from a floating line in June and July to T -14 or MOW tips in the winter.
Nick Rowell, Anadromous Anglers

The Clackamas is a year around fishery for winter and summer steelhead. It fishes well at a variety of levels in the winter and summer. Nick Rowell knows the river very well. He also knows two handed Skagit style fishing and casting and is a brilliant fly tier. The season for winter fishing is December to April. New summer run steelhead start arriving in April as do the elusive Spring Chinook. The summer steelhead goes into July. At that time Nick heads for the Deschutes River and guides multi day trips there for River Runner Outfitters. The trips are drift boat day floats, with most all of the fishing done while wading and swinging the fly.

The Santiam River is a fun river to float and fish for Summer Steelhead. With a diversity of water types on different sections of the river, ranging from classic glides to big boulders, it is fishy and keeps you engaged. The water is just over an hour from Portland, making for a reasonable day trip. The fishing here is late May into July.
