Famous Fishing |
The chalk streams of southern England are well known as the cradle of modern fly fishing. The reason why these rivers have enthralled anglers over the years is the nerve-tingling excitement of casting at wild large, wary trout in crystal clear water! That is how the artificial dry fly and nymph came to be developed here in the 19th Century, and although modern technology has improved our equipment, the methods and tactics we use today are essentially the same. Feeding trout are individually stalked with an imitative fly cast delicately and accurately upstream. You will rarely catch a chalk stream trout by accident – each one presents a unique sporting challenge.
Rivers are usually divided into beats, each fished by a fixed number of rods, typically between one and four. When you buy a day of fishing, the beat becomes exclusively yours, and you are unlikely to see anyone outside your immediate group all day, giving you total privacy. Some beats may be fished unguided, but on others a guide is required as part of our arrangement with the owner of the water.
Waters fished include the Test, Anton, Avon, Wylye, Itchen, Lambourn, Kennet, Nadder, Ebble, Dever, Wiltshire Bourne and Bourne Rivulet . Whether you are planning a day of fishing from London by train, a short break or a longer fly fishing vacation, you will be able to fish some of England's finest trout rivers and streams. Your guide will collect you from your hotel each morning, returning you in time for dinner. The area has spectacular country houses, gardens, cathedrals and historic monuments to interest the non-fishers in your party while you fish.
They also teach fly fishing for Trout and Grayling on all the chalkstream rivers, streams and private lakes. There is also advanced instruction on casts and other presentation techniques needed to outwit the most educated brown trout. You can learn more about trout behavior in a single day on a chalk stream than you might in a year on another river. Nowhere else do you get the opportunity to stalk brown trout of such size and quality in such shallow, clear water.
Options for accommodations in the area around the fishing are traditional inns, country house hotels or private houses. In all the recommended establishments, you can expect a warm welcome, superb food and comfortable beds.
