Fishing and Species

Bonefish are the primary species here. The fishing is world class. Typically at least half of the fishing is from the skiff. Preferences can be accommodated. There are some tarpon and permit. These are more in the late spring into summer. They fish out of Maverick Flats Skiffs.

Arrivals and Departures

Pelican Bay is totally flexible on length of stay, arrival and departure days. This makes it easy when getting away for a full week is tough and when you have not been on the flats for so long that a couple more days than a week is perfect. In addition there are flights that arrive in Freeport after dark, making it accessible in a single day of travel from the west coast.

Accomodations

Anglers stay at the Pelican Bay Hotel on Lucaya Beach. Breakfast at the hotel and lunch on the boat are part of the package. Dinner is not included. There are over two dozen restaurants within a short walk, with a variety of cuisine, casualness and price. Walking next door to Sabor (at the hotel), can be the perfect option some nights.

Non Anglers / Activities

This is one the best non-angling options in the world of bonefishing. Depending on the interest, there is diving, golfing, shopping, swimming with dolphins, or reading a book by the pool, to name a few.

Airport / Logistics

Anglers fly into Freeport on Grand Bahama. There is good service from a number of cities. Once you clear customs, take a transfer to the hotel.

Climate

Temperatures range from the low 70's to the low 90's. It is typical Caribbean weather with possible showers and some wind. The warmest weather is from the late spring to summer.

Daily guided fishing, lodging at Pelican Bay Hotel, breakfast and lunch on the boat.

Not Included

Airport transfers, dinner (which is available at 20 restaurants within walking distance), flies, tackle and gratuities.

Currency/Credit Cards

The hotel and nearby restaurants take credit cards. There is no need to change currency as the Bahamian dollar is one to one with the US dollar.

Gratuities

A suggested guide gratuity is $120 + per day for 2 anglers. At the hotel you may leave a gratuity for house keeping of $10+ per person per day.

Medical Facilities

The nearest medical facilities are right in Freeport. Depending on the emergency, you may elect to fly to Florida.

Documentation

A Passport is required for entry and return by US citizens. There is a $20 departure tax.

Beverages

Sodas and water are included with lunch. There is a bar at the hotel. Feel free to bring a favorite bottle for a drink in your room after fishing.

Laundry

House maids at the Hotel will do laundry for "tips". There is a do it yourself washing machine and dryer available as well.

Bahamas

The bonefishing on Grand Bahama is exceptional, with opportunities for singles, pairs, small groups and larger schools. The habitat varies from bottoms of soft sand, grass flats, harder white sand that is good for wading, and marl. The average size of the fish is an impressive 4 to 5 pounds, with many anglers catching 6 to 8 pound fish. There are opportunities for double-digit fish, with the largest to date being 14.5 pounds. The overall quality of the fish and their habitat are what compels anglers to return next season.

Permit are on the flats spring through summer. It is not a permit-only destination but there are enough around to keep another rod rigged for them. Tarpon are migratory and around May through the summer. In addition there are Mutton snappers, triggerfish, barracuda and jacks.

The special offshore fly fishing program has been operating since 2004. Fishing is for yellow fin tuna, dorado, skip jack tuna and blackfin tuna. This is all done on the same day as flats fishing, from the afternoon until dark, and also on arrival and departure days. They will furnish all gear and flies as part of the deal. It is best done by a party of 4 anglers. At the end of a double day of flats and offshore fishing, you may even say you have had enough fishing for one day.

The H2o is a professional team of fly fishing guides that are on the water every month of the year. They are unique in that their boats are on trailers. This provides access to a variety of launch points, chosen by weather, tide and fishing. Anglers fish out of well-maintained 17-foot Maverick skiffs, powered by 85 HP Yamaha outboards. Each is equipped with a VHF radio, cell phone, USCG-rated safety kits, poling platform and lean post.

Anglers stay at Pelican Bay Hotel, in beautiful well appointed waterfront rooms with two options: either a one bedroom suite or a deluxe room. Although anglers will experience the fishery as very remote and undisturbed, the lodging is quite the contrary, with comfort and access to the island’s top restaurants and myriad activities, all a short walk from the room. Included in the fishing package are: hotel accommodations, breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, daily guided fishing and lunch on the water.

Dinner is not included, but there are nearly 20 restaurants within walking distance, including one at the hotel, offering a range of cuisine, style and price.
