The Rio Grande has the best sea run brown fishing in the world. Kau Tapen ("House of Fishing" in the Ona language) opened in 1985 and was the first fly fishing lodge in Tierra del Fuego. It represents the standard of elegance by which other lodges are measured. The de las Carreras family has since made improvements every year and enjoys a loyal and almost fanatical clientele. The lodge has nine spacious guest rooms for twelve anglers, each with a private bath. A spacious living area opens up to vistas of the Menendez and Rio Grande valleys. Welcoming you back from fishing is a large roaring fire and well stocked bar. In addition, guests have the full use of the lodge's fly tying table and amenities such as massage, sauna and steam room, and drying rooms for wet gear. An acclaimed chef and house staff are experienced and excited to serve. Fine Argentine wines are chosen as a complement to each meal, and menus will delight even the most discriminating palate.
Kau-Tapen is located on a large estancia with some of the best fly water on the Rio Grande. It holds fish in all kinds of water conditions from low to high. There are five world records for sea run browns from their water. The season is from December to early April. Anglers who enjoy steelhead or Atlantic Salmon will really like this fishing. The techniques are somewhat dictated by the water conditions. They range from skating a dry fly to swinging a small nymph, and swinging a traditional wet fly to hucking a big intruder.
