The Kiwi style of spotting and stalking wild rainbow and brown trout is what makes your fishing experience here exciting, challenging and unique. Your guide Kevin Payne specializes in sight-fishing for big trout with dry flies and nymphs. Whether you spend a few days or a couple of weeks fishing with him, he will put you on fish you did not even know existed. His skill as a guide and local knowledge will make your trip to New Zealand one to remember. He caters to all skill levels from children and novices to seasoned anglers.
Back Country Trout specializes in making an itinerary tailored to suit you and your overall fishing holiday plans, including catering to non-fishing partners, spouses and children. Packages or days can start from Christchurch airport or your hotel if needed. They do not run a lodge but instead have the flexibility to work closely with top quality bed & breakfasts, lodges and farm stays to ensure a good rest after your day. There is also an option for a private, secluded shepherds hut for comfortable overnight stays with fly fishing at the front door. It comes down to the best fit for the angler, their budget and the proximity to the fishing.
Their main trout fly fishing season runs from October 1- April 30, though some fishing is available all year around. The region boasts a mix of spring creeks, freestone rivers and large, braided glacial rivers. Accessing the local and back-country rivers by 4WD, without the need for the extra expense of a helicopter, makes for an overall moderately-priced trip. A heli is an option, however, if one is needed. Most days involve some walking, so being mobile is important, but there won't be any "death marches".
