Fishing and Species
Bonefishing is what most anglers prefer to do, particularly if it?s their first time on the flats or at Acension Bay. There is so much water to fish with a great diversity of habitat. If the wind comes up you can typically get in the lee for casting. These waters are noted for some of the best permit fishing anywhere. There are small tarpon who live in the bay year around due to the abundance of food. Seasonally, big tarpon enter the bay. Snook live in the bay and are in "the snooky" type of mangrove waters. Like permit, they require a deliberate pursuit.

Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge opened its doors on January 1996 and has quickly become one of the Yucatan's most popular fishing destinations. The lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka'an (Mayan for, "where the sky is born") Biosphere Reserve. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. To the east lays the blue Caribbean, and a few hundred yards off shore the Palancar Barrier Reef stretches from southern Belize to north of Cancun. On the western side lies the vast "El Rio" system of flats, channels and mangroves. Ten miles to the north is the famed inlet through the barrier beach known locally as the "Boca". Four miles to the south lays the incomparable Ascension Bay. The entire area boasts some of the Caribbean's greatest flats fishing for bonefish, permit, snook and tarpon.
Located on a solitary white sand beach, near turquoise water with a magnificent coral reef at 90 yards from the beach, the lodge can take up to 22 anglers. There are eleven rooms in three buildings, all with A/C and private bathroom with walk-in shower, most with an oceanview. The spacious Seaclusion house is where exquisite meals and cold drinks are served, fishing stories are told, and tommorrow’s bugs are tied. A staff of experienced guides will show you the vast waters and the riches of Acsension Bay.

Ascension Bay offers year-round possibilities for bonefish, permit, jacks, barracudas and snappers. The wade fishing in the bay on firm flats is quite good in most places. There are some juvenile tarpon year round but the season for larger fish is April through October. The best snook fishing is November through March, with some fish available year around.
