Fishing and Species

The Chimehuin flows through the estancia with access to nine miles of water and both banks. There is every kind of diverse habitat you could want to fish. It is loaded with rainbows and some browns, big ones! It is fished with dry flies, nymphs and streamers, and typically accessed by walking and wading. They also have 4 miles of the Quilquihue and 3 miles private spring creek.

Accomodations

Tipiliuke Lodge has nine private bedrooms, each with a private bath. There is a comfortable living area, dining room and bar. The lodge is very well-appointed and updated over the years but maintains its charm. In addition, there is the private three bedroom stone house "Mayal". This can be rented separately by a family or three couples. It does not come with the lodge services or amenities.

Non Anglers / Activities

Tipiliuke is one of the better destinations for non-anglers. Activities include - horseback riding, golfing at the nearby Jack Nicklaus designed course, birding, hiking on the 50,000 acre ranch, cooking lessons and spa at the golf club.

Airport / Logistics

The local airport is Chapelco, located 12 minutes from the ranch. There are non-stop flights there most days from Buenos Aires. If there is not a flight when you want to travel, you can fly into Bariloche, where there are usually 5 flights per day, and hire a car or rent one.

Climate

Day time temperatures range from 40 to 80 degrees depending on the time of year of your visit and what the weather does that week. Early and late season are cooler.

Airport transfers from Chapelco/San Martin Airport, all meals, daily guided fishing, all wine and beer.

Not Included

Transfers from Bariloche, laundry, gratuities to guides and staff, phone calls, tackle and flies.

The lodge takes credit cards. You should bring cash for gratuities.

Gratuities

Suggested guide gratuities are $100 per day per guide and house gratuities of $40 per day per person.

Medical Facilities

There are medical facilities in San Martin. Medevac coverage is strongly recommended.

Documentation

A US Passport is required. Nothing else is required for US citizens. Please check on current COVID protocols and requirements.

Beverages

All beverages are included: wine, beer, spirits, sodas and bottled water. If you have a particular liquor you would enjoy before or after dinner, it is a good idea to bring it along.

Tipiliuke is part of the 50,000-acre Cerro de los Pinos Estancia, founded in 1909 by the grandfather of the current owners. Over the years, the lodge has been remodeled and evolved to be very comfortable for guests, but it still retains the original charm and warmth. The Chimehuin River meanders for nine miles through the ranch, with water on both banks for guests to fish. In addition, there are nearly four miles of the smaller Quilquihue River, a perfect three or four weight stream. All of the water is fished by wading and easy stream access. The rivers have mostly rainbows but there are some brown trout as well. Fishing includes dry flies, streamers and nymphs. The best fish from my visit to the ranch was a big brownie who tried to swallow a respectable rainbow whole. It would not let go and the whole time we were thinking that all of our flies were way too small.

Located 10 minutes from the Chapelco airport and only a short drive from the town of San Martin,Tipiliuke is the perfect destination for hardcore anglers, couples and families. They are unique in having non-fishing activities and the vast estancia to ride and hike on. Most fly fishing lodges have only a small amount of property and do not have the resources to go beyond the interests of anglers. This diversity of non-fishing options in no way lessens the quality of the fishing or the ranch’s dedication in pursuit of it. In addition to the nine-bedroom lodge there is the option of a three-bedroom house for families and friends.

With a minimum two-night stay, and no set arrival or departure days, Tipiliuke can be either the center of your Patagonia itinerary or part of one that covers the range of fishing of the region.
